Enjoying a Manufacturing Job Going Into the Fifth Year

Mizunami Seiki Co., Ltd. has its head office located in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture. The company has over 70 years of experience as a local manufacturing company. Currently, the company operates three business divisions: the OverLock Business handling the development, design, and manufacture of overlock sewing machines; the Aircraft Business in charge of machining and assembly of metal parts for civil and defense aircrafts at the main factory; and the Automobile and Industrial Equipment Business carrying out parts machining for automobiles and industrial equipment at the Inatsu factory.

At this company, more and more female machining technicians are working with SPEEDIO.

One of them is Ms. Miyamoto, who has been with the company for five years. She belongs to the Machining Section of the Mizunami Manufacturing Division, which works on aircraft parts. Ms. Miyamoto revealed why she joined the company, "I joined because I love manufacturing." She chose Mizunami Seiki because it was rare for a company to make aircraft parts. Asked about the rewarding aspects of the job, she replied, "It is so enjoyable to see a product being completed with a program that you created yourself. Before I knew it, five years had passed," she added with a laugh.

Learning How to Operate SPEEDIO in About a Month

Currently, aside from the TC-S2DN, Ms. Miyamoto also works with the S1000X1 and S500Xd1. Section manager Mr. Adachi commended Ms. Miyamoto's work, "She is extremely good. Her learning speed surpasses expectations." He added, "With machining, the image of men lifting heavy objects and so on is strong. However, with the BT30 taper SPEEDIO, I have seen her work and learned that even women can do the setup and preset easily. So I really want her to take full advantage of the SPEEDIO and use it to its fullest."

Asked about the ease of handling the machines, Ms. Miyamoto replied, "The TC-S2DN and S500Xd1 have low tables, so it is easy to reach all the way back and setup the machines. Aside from that, you can change tools without typing any code if you use the app, and it is also easy to operate." She added, "At first, I was worried about whether I could handle the equipment properly, but I was actually able to learn how to operate it in just one to two months, and I thought it was quite easy to use."

On the other hand, she also gave her honest opinion on the difficulties of using the machines. "The location of the spindle is a bit far, requiring me to bend forward when doing boring work, which may cause back problems. In this case, it might be easier to do for a man with long arms."

Exceeding Work Expectations and Being Sent to Overseas Offices

On the empowerment of women in the workplace, the company's President Nagara commented, "Compared to the past, more women have joined the company, saying they like manufacturing. Since they seem to really like manufacturing so much, I decided to assign them where they can be involved in machining while working on NC machines. At the moment, there are three women in Machining Section, including Ms. Miyamoto (one is on maternity leave). They are all hard working and live up to our expectations."

However, Ms. Miyamoto's achievements go beyond that. In 2023, she visited the overlock sewing machine manufacturing factory in Taiwan for about a month, to join the launching of a machining line for a new model using SPEEDIO. She plans to visit again this year. Mr. Fujiwara, Acting Section Manager of the Development Section, Overlock Business Division, who worked with her in Taiwan, also commented, "She has been a great help."
