Improvement of productivity and quality needed
Before introducing our R450X1N, Mitutoyo was urged to address two challenges: reduction in variation in quality and improvement of productivity. As machining was performed using three machines (one product number per machine), there was a variation in the quality of each product number. To minimize this variation, it was necessary to reduce the number of machines.

Mitutoyo is a comprehensive manufacturer of precision measuring instruments and is a leading company in the precision measurement industry, producing more than 5,500 types of products, which is the largest number in the industry.
The R450X1N is equipped with a pallet changer, which was a major factor for Mitutoyo to purchase our machine. As external setup is possible on the pallet changing machine, it helps reduce non-cutting time.
When selecting the machine, they compared the performance of a pallet changing machine and a non-pallet changing machine, and confirmed that productivity using a pallet changing machine was better by approximately 23%. Although they were planning to purchase two machines at first, they decided to purchase one R450X1N, thereby reducing the number of machines.

Three machines replaced with one R450X1N
Previously, they were using three machines to produce the required volume. Now, one R450X1N can cover this due to its high productivity.
Although two product numbers are machined on two pallets of the R450X1N (one product number per pallet), it was confirmed there was a very little variation in quality, which ensures these products can be delivered reliably to downstream processes. This resulted in reduction in on-side workload and improvement of logistics.
Tool changes that occur frequently in daily production can be instructed easily from the NC unit. User-friendliness like this is highly regarded.
