What Can the Evolving BT30 Machining Centers Do? And What Sets Them Apart From BT40 Machines
Compact machine tools are known for their small footprint and low power consumption, but also for their inability to machine large objects and limited rigidity.
In this article, we feature the advantages of the SPEEDIO series lineup of BT30 machines and show how they challenge the typical image of compact machine tools.
BT30 Advantages
BT30 machine tools offer three advantages:
- High productivity
- Compact design
- Energy savings
BT30 machining centers are designed using components that are all compact and light, enabling more agile operation than BT40 machines. This design allows the spindle and table to move quickly using minimal power consumption while reducing impact forces during traveling and when stopping. Cutting speeds in machine tools are determined by the workpiece material and the tool's cutting conditions. This means that, to improve productivity, the key is to select a machine with short non-cutting times—such as times spent on tool changes and tool travel—rather than focusing on the machining time. With their agile operation, BT30 machine tools can shorten these times.
With smaller sizes overall compared to BT40 models, BT30 machine tools offer more compact footprints and greater flexibility in factory layout. Their size also allows more units to be installed within limited floor spaces.
As mentioned earlier, the use of components designed to be compact and lightweight makes BT30 machine tools highly effective at reducing power consumption. While larger machines like BT40 can handle a broader range of machining tasks, using a BT40 for workpieces that a BT30 can adequately machine results in unnecessary energy use. Choosing a BT30 helps keep power consumption low and provides energy-saving benefits.
BT30 Disadvantages
On the other hand, BT30 machine tools are often perceived as having the following disadvantages:
- Difficulty machining large workpieces
- Lack of rigidity, making it difficult to machine hard materials
Although compactness was listed above as a key advantage of BT30 machine tools, it also contributes to the perception that they are unsuitable for machining large parts due to limited table size and restricted cutting tool range of motion. In addition, impressions are that the thinner spindles lack rigidity and have trouble machining hard materials.
However, the SPEEDIO series includes models that challenge these common perceptions about the limitations of BT30 machine tools.
SPEEDIO Series Lineup of BT30 Machine Tools
Brother SPEEDIO is a line of machine tools specializing in BT30 machining centers. Through a machine/controller integrated development approach in which both the machine unit and the NC system software are developed in-house, SPEEDIO delivers world-class productivity, a compact footprint, and power savings. The extensive lineup consists of 11 models across 7 series (as of July 2026), capable of meeting a wide range of machining needs—from high-speed aluminum machining and heavy-duty steel machining of both large and small workpieces to multi-face machining and complex machining.
Redefining the BT30: Three Key Models From the Versatile SPEEDIO Series
In this section, we introduce three models from the SPEEDIO series that challenge the conventional image of BT30 machines. These models feature wide machining areas, high machining capabilities, and multi-tasking/multi-face machining functions.
Horizontal model equipped with a tilting rotary table and a ø680 jig area: HU550Xd1
With its large jig area and specifications that include an A-axis range of 30° to -120°, a 360° B-axis range of motion, a maximum tool length of 350 mm, and a Y-axis travel of 500 mm, the HU550Xd1 can accommodate a wide variety of workpieces.
The optional 10,000 min-1 high-torque specification further expands its machining capability, enabling both high-efficiency machining and heavy-duty machining.

Wide model offering one of the largest machining areas in the BT30 class: W1000Xd2
The W1000Xd2 boasts a machining area 1,000 mm long and 500 mm wide—a size comparable to BT40 machines. The optional 10,000 min-1 high-torque spindle specification features an enlarged spindle bearing diameter for improved rigidity. This model is capable of machining a wide range of workpieces, including heavy-duty steel cutting.
Multi-tasking machine enabling both turning and milling through one-time chucking: M300Xd2
Equipped with a tilting rotary table that includes a turning spindle, these models combine multiple processes in a single unit—from complex machining by turning and milling to multi-face machining. They can also perform simultaneous 5-axis machining and gear cutting such as hobbing and skiving through spindle/turning spindle synchronous control.
Expanded BT30 Coverage
SPEEDIO is a series of compact machining centers launched by Brother in 2013. By using BT30 spindles, SPEEDIO machine tools are compact and consume less energy. The lineup includes models with specifications designed to overcome the typical drawbacks of BT30 tools—such as small machining areas and difficulty machining hard materials. The SPEEDIO series meets customers' needs for waste-free machining capabilities.
